The first DC Touchdown Club presented by Capital Bank N.A. High School Football Player of the Week, powered by Under Armour, is DeMatha quarterback Beau English, who guided the Stags to a 38-14 rout of Miami Central in a season-opening matchup of nationally-ranked teams broadcast on ESPN.
English, a junior in his second season as a starter, helped the Stags prevail despite a grisly injury to one of his top targets. Wide receiver Darryl Turner Jr., a Maryland recruit, fractured his fibula late in the first quarter and will miss the rest of the season. With Turner out of the lineup, English stayed focused on what he does best: Making good decisions in a timely manner. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns and rushed five times for 48 yards and two touchdowns.
“The number one thing that stands out about Beau is his ability to lead,” DeMatha Coach Elijah Brooks said. “He has all the respect and commands the offense out there on the field. He’s a 4.0 student, so he’s extremely bright. He knows what his strengths are and he maximizes it every time he gets on the field.”
