Federal Ban on Sports Betting Overturned by Supreme Court

Sports betting in the United States was deemed illegal in 1992 when the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA) was passed.

In a massive, game-changing move, the federal ban has been overturned in the Supreme Court on a 6-3 vote. Whether or not sports betting is legal is now a state issue and each state will be able to decide whether sports betting will be legal or not in their state. Nevada is currently the only state where you can immediately begin betting on sports, but according to ESPN.com, “One research firm estimated before the ruling that if the Supreme Court were to strike down the law, 32 states would likely offer sports betting within five years.”
