32 year old English soccer legend Wayne Rooney has agreed in principle to a contract with DC United, according to reports. Rooney’s contract with DC United is rumored to be $17 million, and DC United has offered Rooney a contract through the 2020 season.
Rooney had been playing for Everton since July 2017 and is Everton’s leading goal scorer this season (11 goals) despite not having scored a goal since December 18th. Rooney is obviously far from his prime and isn’t nearly the same player he used to be, but he still can make some highlight plays which should be a big boost for DC United, who are dead last in the Eastern Conference in the MLS with only 5 points. Rooney has 250 career goals.
Rooney continues the trend of aging superstars leaving top clubs to join the MLS in what’s essentially a retirement tour. Rooney joins Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA Galaxy), David Beckham (played for the LA Galaxy from 2007-2012), Sebastian Giovinco (has played for FC Toronto since 2015), Thierry Henry (played for the New York Red Bulls from 2010-2014), David Villa (has played for New York City FC since 2014), and many other aging soccer legends to end up in the MLS. Rooney should provide some excitement among the DC United fanbase and fill some seats.
