Fans Have ‘Once In A Lifetime’ Experience at ESPN Combine
By Daniel Weintraub
Children were awestruck by the Redskins’ practice facility and Super Bowl trophies; grown men grew googly-eyed at the chance to experience their boyhood dreams of Redskins glory. The inaugural ESPN980 Combine at Redskins Park turned out to be a fun time for everyone involved. Hundreds of fans came out to experience a day in the life of an NFL prospect, many of them having anticipated the event for weeks.
“As soon as I found about it, I was excited,” said Silver Spring, Md. resident Eric Bond. “I was jumping for joy in my car.”
Participants tried their luck with passing, kicking, running the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump, pass catching and a customized Wonderlic test. Excitement and adrenaline were palpable on and around the field, as fans geared up for their golden football moments.
Some of the fans actually underestimated their own abilities; Accokeek, Md. resident Brandon Reed thought his best event would be the 40-yard dash, but he ended up with a 35.5” vertical jump, the best score of the day.
After the combine prospects finished showing off their athletic talents, they were treated to a lunch catered by Urban Bar-B-Que, and then led to take pictures with Washington’s three Vince Lombardi Trophies.
Many fans also had the chance to meet former Redskins star and current ESPN980 personality Chris Cooley, as well as get expert kicking advice from 1982 NFL MVP Mark Moseley. ESPN980’s Thom Loverro spent most of the day chatting with fans on a sunny and splendid Saturday morning.
“It was phenomenal,” said Marcos Arancibia of Bristow, Va. “Once in a lifetime experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
